Early bird
Restaurant: The Clubhouse at Dania Jai-Alai. Address: 301 E. Dania Beach Blvd., Dania Beach. Phone: 954-920-1511. Wheelchair accessible: Yes. Early bird hours: Tuesday-Friday 5:45-6:15 p.m. Meal includes: Bread, salad, entree, baked potato, dessert and coffee or tea. Price range: $11.95-$14.95 includes table from which you can see the jai-alai action, program, dinner and a reserved seat on the fronton floor if you wish to move there. Service/atmosphere: Very congenial and particularly helpful servers who can even explain a trifecta. The Clubhouse has a pleasing supper club ambience with tiered levels so every table has a good view of the court. Color monitors attached to each table give an up close look at the action and if you change channels, you can pick up simulcasts of other pari-mutuel events. Betting messengers pay tableside visits so you don't have to leave your seat to place bets or cash in your winning tickets. Dining notes: You need to buy a ticket at the box office for $1 (it's subtracted from your dinner bill). Then, there's a short elevator ride to the clubhouse level. Once seated, you can stay at your table for the entire evening or move to reserved seating on the fronton floor. Dinners begin with good, hot, crusty rolls delivered just in time to choose from the four entrees: chicken parmesan, grilled chopped sirloin, the fresh catch and prime rib. The good-sized salads are nice blendings of field greens and assorted veggies that go well with the well-balanced balsamic vinaigrette or house-made blue cheese. We sampled the fresh catch, a perfectly cooked meaty salmon fillet in a light lemon butter sauce. The chopped sirloin was cooked to perfect medium, as requested, and had good grill flavors. A ladle of tasty light mushroom gravy kept the high quality of the sirloin intact. The baked potatoes were fresh and fluffy and came with sides of sour cream and extra butter. Place your final bets in between bites of fresh-cut cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple and grapes, if you order the fruit cup. Or there's the sweetness of chocolate cake rolled around vanilla ice cream drizzled with chocolate syrup. If your luck is running, you just might win the price of your dinner.
